Stay Safe, Stay Swimming

We all want to have fun around the pool, but in order to relax and enjoy properly safety needs to come first. We at McBurney Pools and Spas want your pool to be as safe and secure as possible, so all you need to worry about is having a good time. We have set out multiple steps you can take (and in some cases must take) to ensure exactly that.

If you are ever unsure about backyard pool regulations where you live check out your cities by-laws. They will provide you with specific standards and even measurements that can help you create a safe backyard pool area.

  1. Good Fences Make Good Pools. A good pool fence is a must when planning out your backyard. As mentioned before, each area has slightly different expectations of what a pool fence should be. In general, you should have a fence with a self-closing, self-latching gate and keep the gate closed at all times. There are also height requirements. For example, in Ottawa a pool fence needs to be at least 1.5 metres high. Contact us today and we can help you begin the process of installing the perfect pool fence in no time!
  2. Rules Rule! Establish some basic pool rules. Rules like ‘children must be accompanied by an adult’, ‘no glass or breakables around the pool’ or ‘always swim with a buddy’. Decide on rules that work for you and your family, write them out and display them clearly near your pool so everyone – even house guests – will be aware of them.
  3. Life Jackets are Life Savers. Have life jackets and/or personal floatation devices handy. These can be used by people who are non-swimmers but still want to get in on the pool fun. They are also vital in the event of an emergency. A life jacket or personal floatation device may be the kind of this you don’t use often, but you’ll be SO grateful to have when it is needed.
